The Mandalorian & Grogu Review: Fun, Safe, and About as Risky as Warm Milk

Well, Star Wars is finally back in theaters, and after sitting through The Mandalorian & Grogu, I can honestly say... it was fine.

Not amazing. Not terrible. Just fine.

And honestly, that might be the biggest problem.

The movie takes everything people loved about The Mandalorian TV series and throws it onto the big screen. You've got Din Djarin being a badass, Grogu being adorable, cool action sequences, space battles, weird creatures, and enough merchandise opportunities to keep Disney executives smiling for the next decade. The problem is that it never feels bigger than the show it came from.

A lot of the movie feels like somebody stitched together three really good episodes of The Mandalorian and called it a feature film.

Don't get me wrong. I had fun. Grogu is still stealing every scene he's in. Pedro Pascal continues to carry the role with very little face time, which is honestly impressive at this point. The action is entertaining, the visuals look great, and there are some genuinely cool Star Wars moments sprinkled throughout.

But once the credits rolled, I found myself asking a question I wasn't expecting:

"Was that really worth bringing Star Wars back to theaters for?"

That's where the movie struggles.

After seven years without a Star Wars movie, I was hoping for something that felt important. Something that moved the universe forward. Something that made me walk out of the theater wanting to immediately buy another ticket.

Instead, I got a really expensive side quest.

The story is simple, the stakes never feel particularly high, and most of the surprises are things you've probably already seen coming from hyperspace. It plays things incredibly safe. So safe that at times it feels like Disney was terrified of upsetting anybody.

The good news is that it's miles better than some of the rougher Disney-era Star Wars projects. The bad news is that being better than the worst movies isn't exactly the glowing endorsement Lucasfilm was probably hoping for.

What saves the movie is the chemistry between Din and Grogu. That's still the heart of this franchise, and when the movie focuses on their relationship, it works. Those moments remind you why audiences fell in love with these characters in the first place.

Overall, The Mandalorian & Grogu is a fun popcorn movie. It's entertaining, easy to watch, and Star Wars fans will probably enjoy spending more time with these characters. But if you're expecting the movie that reignites the franchise and reminds everyone why Star Wars once ruled the galaxy, this isn't it.

Final Score: 7/10

A good time at the movies? Absolutely.

The future of Star Wars?

Not quite.

This is the way... I guess.
