THIS is the Punisher We Needed!
I finally watched Punisher: One Last Kill and holy fkn shit… THIS is the Punisher.
Look, I’ve always liked Tom Jane’s version for what it was. That movie had style, brutality, and honestly captured the early 2000s comic book vibe really well. The soundtrack was the soundtrack to my life at that time. The apartment fight with the Russian is still legendary. It felt like a gritty revenge flick wearing a beat up Punisher skull shirt. I respect it for that.
But thank God we finally got John Berenthal because THAT man IS Frank Castle. He doesn’t feel like an actor playing the Punisher. He feels like a combat veteran barely holding himself together with duct tape, trauma, rage, and one last mission. Every scene with him feels heavy. Even when he’s silent you can feel the PTSD radiating off him like heat from a burning building.
That’s what makes One Last Kill so damn good. It understands Frank Castle isn’t just a killing machine. He’s addicted to the war because the war is the only thing keeping him functioning. The violence isn’t glorified here. It’s tragic. Frank kept telling himself “one last kill” but deep down you know there’s never gonna BE a last kill because stopping means facing the ghosts of his family (literally), the military, and everything broken inside him.
Bernthal brings this exhausted sadness to Frank that no other version has nailed. The man looks like he hasn’t slept peacefully in 20 years. He’s angry, damaged, hyper vigilant, emotionally detached, but somehow still trying to hold onto the tiny scraps of humanity he has left. THAT is the Punisher.
And thank God Disney didn’t water this down. This thing is brutal, dark, depressing, violent, and uncomfortable exactly the way a Punisher story should be. No quips. No goofy MCU safety net. Just Frank Castle drowning in grief and dragging criminals to hell with him. And I felt every ounce of grief he was carrying through the screen.
My only gripe is that in the new Spider-Man movie Frank is going to be completely watered down thanks to the PG-13 rating we know the movie is going to carry. Without much else left to say…..Punisher: One Last Kill is a 10/10. More of THIS please Disney, for the love of GOD!
